If you are on a low income, you may be eligible for legal aid

The Commissioner of Legal Aid has approved me as a "lead provider" of legal aid services. I am able to act for legally aided clients in Family Law matters including Care of Children*, Domestic Violence and CYF work.

I do not do Relationship Property work on legal aid.

If you wish to apply for legal aid, I will help you to fill in the Legal Aid application form. Please bring with you the following documents to support your application for legal aid:
  • A letter from WINZ confirming the amount you receive in benefit, or a recent bank statement showing your benefit coming in.
  • A recent payslip if you have had a job in the past year (even a part time job).
  • A copy of your rates notice if you own a house.
  • A list of the debts you owe.
There is a $50.00 user charge for all family legal aid applications except for CYF matters and for applicants for protection orders. You will need to bring this $50.00, in cash, to our first appointment.

If your application for legal aid is granted, then I will invoice the Ministry of Justice directly for all your legal fees. You may have to pay the Ministry of Justice back for those fees, but it will be at an affordable rate.

I will explain the terms and conditions of your legal aid grant when we meet. Further information is available at the Ministry of Justice website.

*Please note that under the Family Justice System, implemented on 31 March 2014, legal aid will not be available for many non-urgent Care of Children Act proceedings. More information is available here.
